Sleep paralysis is where we are awake but unable to move. 
During sleep, a part of the brain in the pons releases chemical substances causing paralysis of the body. When we are about to wake up, these chemicals start to disappear and allow our muscles to move again. But if we wake up before the chemicals disappear, we experience sleep paralysis
